Aaaah, fall is in the air! As the calendar pages turn, it’s time to welcome the new season with some new activities. School is underway, football is back on, leaves are falling – there’s so much to love about fall! Here are 5 ways to celebrate and welcome the new season.
Make Room
If it’s fall, that means the holidays will be here before we know it! Get ahead of the holiday rush by doing a little “fall cleaning” this autumn. Clear out closets, toy bins and book racks to make room for holiday gifts. Clean up storage areas and organize remaining items for a fresh feel.
But what to do with all the items you no longer need? There are lots of options! First, you can host a family yard sale to save up for the holidays. Or the proceeds from the sale can be donated to a charity of the family’s choosing. Lastly, your items can be donated to a local charity – many are gearing up for the holidays as well.
DIY Decor
What better way to celebrate the season than with some beautiful decor. Break out the pumpkins, leaves and orange accents to warm up your home. Smell the Season
Fall is one of the seasons with the strongest scent memory. Almost anyone can describe what fall smells like and many will say the same; warm cinnamon. There are a multitude of other flavors that are associated with fall as well – sage, orange, clove, apple, pumpkin, even camp fire smoke! Warm your home with the sweet smells of fall by creating your own stove top potpourri (minus the camp fire smoke!).
Fill a pot and set to boil. Add in your favorite scents like cinnamon sticks, orange slices and sage leaves. Or apples, pumpkin pie spice and cloves. Bring contents to a boil and then turn down to a simmer to scent your home for hours.
*do not leave pot unattended and use a back burner to reduce the risk of accidents.
Do a Service Project
So often we focus on helping others only at the holidays. But so many charities are in need of help all year long! Why not choose a service project to do as a family before the craziness of the holidays starts? It can be simple like cleaning up trash from your neighborhood or park. Or helping a neighbor by raking leaves or cooking them a meal. Go bigger by finding a local non-profit in need of a volunteer to serve meals or organize donations. It doesn’t matter what you do, all that matters is that you’re getting to spend some quality time as a family while serving your community.
Get Outdoors
Whether you’re gearing up for a long, cold winter, or just coming into nicer weather after a blistering summer, it’s time to get outside! Soak up the season; talk a walk, pick up leaves, head to the park for a picnic. Did you know spending just 15 minutes in a green space can improve your overall health? So head outside, find some trees and grass, and enjoy the changing of the seasons!
