With cold and flu season upon us, it can be challenging to keep your kids healthy. It seems like someone is always battling a cough or stuffy nose. To help you avoid the vicious cold and flu cycle this year, we’ve put together some great tips to help them to keep from getting sick!
Hand Washing
One of the best ways to stop germs in their tracks is with frequent and thorough hand washing. Hand washing has been a big part of our daily routine, especially over the last 2 years. Make sure your child knows to wash their hands after they play, after the restroom, and when they get home from school. They should also wash before eating, Hand sanitizer should only be used as a last resort when soap and water aren’t available.
Immunity-Boosting Diet
Meals with lots of fruits and veggies are a surefire way to give your child’s immune system a little boost. Avoid sugar and processed foods, instead opting for all-natural foods that are high in vitamin D and vitamin C. Foods high in zinc and probiotics will help fight off any bacteria that head your child’s way.
Getting a Good Night’s Sleep
Sleep is the time when your body heals and repairs itself. Babies under 1 year should get 12-18 hours of sleep each day. School-aged children should get anywhere between 10-12 hours of sleep each night. Getting enough sleep will give your child plenty of time to recuperate and recover from the day.
Staying Hydrated
Dehydration will make your child more prone to infection. Water helps distribute nutrients throughout the body, while also flushing out any toxins that are trying to make their way in. Take a look at how much water your child is drinking each day, and strive to have them consume at least half of their body weight in ounces each day.
Avoid Sharing
Kids love to share, well sometimes. While we love to see sharing in the classroom, remind your child not to share drinks and snacks with their friends. They should also avoid sharing clothes, hats, or anything that is close to their mouth or nose.
Keep Their Toothbrushes Fresh
Your child’s toothbrush can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. The moist climate combined with those germ-hiding bristles can cause illness and infection. A good idea is to buy your child a new brush, replacing it right away if your child gets sick. With many environmentally friendly toothbrushes on the market, replacing their brush frequently isn’t something that will break the bank.
Getting the occasional bug is part of being a kid. But with these great tips, you will be able to keep your kids happy, healthy, and germ-free!
