While Family Literacy Day may have passed this year, we believe that every day is a chance to promote reading! There are so many wonderful books that can be read aloud to preschoolers, that it was tough to pick our top 5. However, we’ve put together this list of 5 of our favorites to read aloud here at our learning centers and at home with our own families.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, is one of those books that will keep your kids giggling. Read aloud, this book has fun rhyming text and captivating illustrations. While the newer version is a little different than the original, this book is full of fun and silliness.
Cars and Trucks and Things That Go
Many of our parents likely remember these books from when they were young. Richard Scarry’s classic illustrations and silly stories have sold over 100 million books worldwide. His books help to build vocabulary for toddlers while sparking an interest in the world around them.
Llama Llama Misses Mama
While we love all of the Llama Llama books, but this one, in particular, is a great read for children adjusting to preschool life. This book helps children express their fears while offering them the reassurance they need for this new adventure.
Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes
Pete the Cat is another fun series we enjoy reading with our students. In this story, Pete’s cool shoes take him all over campus to see the library, lunchroom, and playground. This is the perfect book for those entering Kindergarten next year.
The Bad Seed
All of the books by Jory John teach subtle, yet valuable lessons. This one, in particular, illustrates how important it is to be yourself, and how anyone can transform no matter their situation or circumstance. We love how this book promotes positive change and acceptance.
